This was the first vintage I had ever tasted of this lovely Cru Bourgeois, which lies next door to Sociando Mallet and is owned by the folks at Château Rauzan Gassies in Margaux. The cépages is sixty-five percent merlot and thirty-five percent cabernet sauvignon and the wine is never aged in more than ten percent new wood. The 2009 is really excellent, as it offers up a fresh, ripe and classy nose of cassis, black cherries, chocolate, tobacco smoke and a nice base of soil. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and nicely fleshy, with good, nascent complexity, ripe, chewy tannins and impressive length and grip. This estate was entirely new to me, but the 2009 Bel Orme is extremely impressive and must be one of the great values of the vintage. (Drink between 2014-2030)
