K&L Notes

Winemaker's Notes: "2014 was a very warm season in Hawkes Bay with a typically dry summer. A perfect season to produce delicious, ripe and robust red varietals. The leather and plum aromas of the Merlot combine with spice and red fruit characters of Tempranillo and Malbec. Cassis aromas and structural backbone are provided by the Cabernet family. Richness and soft, ripe tannins make a serious yet eminently drinkable wine. This wine is made to be enjoyed while still quite young or will reward short term cellaring. It can be enjoyed with a wide range of different flavoured food. Drink 3- 5 years from harvest date. Winemaking - Each individual vineyard parcel was harvested separately and then gently de-stemmed prior to fermentation. Subsequently, gentle daily pumping over of the skins during fermentation helped extract a soft, complex structure. Following fermentation, the skin maceration was extended for up to 4 weeks to further integrate and soften the tannins. After 14 months aging in a combination of small French oak and stainless steel tanks, the individual blocks were blended to create the ideal marriage of components. The wine was bottled in September 2015."

Our buyer Ryan Woodhouse long converted me over to Southern Hemisphere values years ago because the dollar for dollar value that he's finding from Australia and New Zealand is unparalleled in any of our other departments. Case in point? This Trinity Hill Red Blend from Hawkes Bay for $9.99. Cab/Merlot blends of this quality, complexity, and elegance don't exist in California anymore for this price. You not only get dark, expansive, palate-coating fruit from the Trinity Hill, but also secondary flavors of minerality and spice that are generally present in wines double and triple the price point. Compare this to the last domestic wine you bought for $9.99 and do a comparison. I promise you you'll be on the Ryan Woodhouse express after doing so.

Trinity Hill has stood out to me as one of the highest end, most serious producers in Hawke's Bay, and this $10 red is a good indication of why. To produce this quality of product at their least expensive level blows me away, as I know this would be considered a top-tier wine for many wineries. It shows medium body with a good amount of structure and acid. The fruit is present, but definitely not overly dominant. There is power to this wine that comes from deliberate, careful winemaking and this certainly does not feel like something the winemaker had to produce to hit financial obligations. I'm excited to see consistent, spot-on winemaking from Trinity Hill from their $80 Homage Syrah to this $10 red blend.

A buffet consisting of almost all of my favorite varietals. This inexpensive bottle is a great find for casual weekday meals and gatherings because it is full of flavor with little fuss. Deep color, tame alcohol, bright and friendly aromas with a touch of hint of a tobacco note that add to it's depth. The ripe tannin profile gives it a sense of seriousness. Tasty.

This wine is simply unbelievable for this price point. 2014 was one of the best (if not the best) vintage in Hawke's Bay for 20 years. Stable Autumn weather and warm vintage conditions gave rise to wines of deep, concentrated fruit, with powerful structure and length. This wine is predominantly a right bank Bordeaux style blend with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon taking the lead with dashes of Tempranillo, Syrah and Malbec adding complexity and character. The fruit was picked from Trinity Hill's incredible estate holdings in Hawke's Bay and showcases the regions stony, gravelly soils that are so perfect for these varieties. Dark plummy fruit, charred spices, coco nib and stony minerals. The wine is medium bodied with a nice tannin structure that drinks far more seriously than the wines modest price point might suggest. This wine can easily stand up to hearty stews and grilled meats or be cellar for 5-8 even 10 years. Quite remarkable for a wine we're offering for under $10!
