K&L Notes

Located in one of the main production zones in Priorat, the beautiful village of Porrera, Celler Cal Pla (also known as Mas d'en Compte) produces fine Priorats based on the local Garnacha and Carinena grapes. Black slate is a special blend and label for the importer, and as usual it over delivers for the price.

Fantastic Priorat with a stellar under-$20 price point to match! A classic blend of Garnacha and Cariñena with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon added for body and texture. The nose is layered, with dark berry and Bing cherry notes moving towards wet stones, dried herbs, and jerky. There is a floral component as well, with the most obvious being fresh violets. Impressively fresh on the palate, with plum, sour cherry, and mineral notes being the most upfront flavors. Tannins are silky and integrated. Drinking well now, and will continue to do so over the next 5-10 years.

This wine come from grapes grown on a steep hillside at about 1000 feet in elevation. It is beautiful and powerful. This Priorat is composed of Garnacha, Carinena, and a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose is very generous, showing violets, berries, anise and smoky bacon. The wine is rich with minerality and texture from the volcanic soil. The tannins are silky and the oak is well incorporated. A fantastic price at $17.99!

Black Slate continues to be as delicious a bottling of sub $20 Priorat as we've been able to find. Every year we taste several different "vi de vila," or village bottlings, of Black Slate and pick our favorite. The Porrera bottling often times leads the pack, and it once again does so for me in 2014. Loads of spicy dark cherry confit aromas, with hints of wild thyme and warm, parched earth, lead to savory flavors, with impressive mid palate intensity, minerality and freshness. And it's the freshness which to me continues to mark many of the best 2013 and 2014 vintage Priorats I have tasted. This is a great bottle of Priorat for the price! Load up, since we bought everything we could and it might well be all that's available of this tasty vintage.
