Luis Pato, aka "Mr. Baga" (so named for his mastery of the tough to grow baga grape varietal) makes some incredibly good, way under the radar wines in the Bairrada region of Portugal, near the Atlantic coast. He is a strong believer that the Atlantic climate, along with his ideal clay and limestone based soil, creates wines that are balanced and capable of long bottle aging. This bottling is composed of 100% baga grapes. It shows tense, cherry fruit flavors with mineral herbal tones, and is undoubtedly a wine for the cellar.This wine is a little bit hard when young, but matures into a real beauty, and is one of the best deals in unique, age-worthy European wines out there. It has a structure (and even some flavors) that bring to mind good Barbaresco (Piemonte lovers, take note!) Highly recommended. According to Jancis Robinson: "This is one of the few great wine producers yet to be discovered by the growing band of American wine lovers thirsty for novel wine experiences."
