K&L Notes

91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 1% Merlot. *94 points Wine Front* "The mighty Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon is a more elegant creature nowadays. This release won't knock anyone between the eyes but it will seduce regardless. It prefers to do you slowly. It's soft, medium-weight, seamless and curranty, with fresh herbs and mints lifting through tobacco / undergrowth / cedarwood. Tannin is a fine, integrated art. The finish is prolonged." Winemaker's Notes: "The first notes on the nose are enticing and herbal, reminiscent of bay leaf and dry thyme. The nose then opens to intense ripe cassis, black pepper, smoke and cocoa with hints of fresh rolled tobacco leaves. On the palate it explodes with red currants and fresh cassis, followed by touches of cloves and juniper berry. A graphite, mineral backbone leads to a still fresh finish supported by structural fine and savoury tannins."

A lovely, dark-fruited Cabernet with plenty of poise and balance! If you like Bordeaux, or cooler-climate California Cabernets, this will be up your alley. Full, rich and opulent on the nose, this wine has some snappy acidity and good rich tannin to fill out the mouth. This will no doubt age beautifully, and with such a bargain price, what's not to love?

I'm regularly asked for a smooth cab on our sales floor. If this stays in stock, it will be a consistent recommendation for me from here on out to that question. This is smooth, polished, and pretty Cabernet that is very easy to drink. Clearly inspired by Bordeaux this wine isn't just fruit and flash. It also has a terrific earthy component and tons of complexity. If you're looking for a wine loaded with more savor than fruit, check out the 2012 version of the same wine, also in stock.

This is a flat-out delicious offering! I am a huge fan of Bordeaux reds and this wine stylistically is very reminiscent of a fine Bordeaux. Spice and red cherry aromas on the nose quickly give way to a suave palate that offers up mocha-laced red fruits and spice flavors. Crisp tannins and racy acidity round out this wonderful wine.

This wine shows little of the bay leaf, herbaceous quality that can come with Margaret River Cab and instead delivers lush fruit and subtle spice. Drinking incredibly well now for a young wine, this was mistaken by one of my colleagues as a 2005 Bordeaux. Incredibly elegant, yet still approachable, this is one I will be stocking up on as the weather cools down, especially at this price point.
