Leroy's Romanee-St.-Vivant has seemingly taken on weight, substance, and structure since I tasted it a year ago. Dark plums, spices, mocha, and dried prunes burst from the glass. This medium-to-full-bodied liquid velvet is packed with chewy red and black fruits. Projected maturity: 2005-2010+. (PR)
Deep red-ruby, not as dark as the extraordinary Santenots. Knockout nose of raspberry, cocoa, licorice, roast coffee and minerals. Glyceral in the mouth and extremely concentrated; offers great fat but with solid supporting backbone. Despite its obvious volume, though, this wine has closed down in the middle palate. Finishes with outstanding length and strong iron and earth tones. Has there been a more consistently spectacular Burgundy cuvée than this one through the decade of the '90s? (ST) 94+
A beautifully spiced and ripe mix of now mostly secondary black fruit aromas gives way to rich, full and naturally sweet medium weight flavors that are blessed with ample amounts of dry extract that confer a velvety mouth feel onto the palate coating and gorgeously long finish. For my taste, this elegant and refined effort has just reached the front end of its peak drinkability though depending on your preferences, it could easily be held for another 10 to 15 years. In a word, terrific.
Gamy and quite fat, showing fine blackberry and rose petal aromas, it kicks into high gear as the acidity and lemony taste bring vibrancy. Medium-bodied, with a spicy, chocolaty finish. (PM)
