The fifth and likely last edition of St Lucia Distillers' impressive 1931 line of experimental aged rums. Named for the year that this special distillery was founded, the 1931 is a blend of 8 different types of rum distilled. The first four are coffey column distilled and aged between 9-10 years in Bourbon and Port Casks. These four components represent approximately 18% of the blend. The next 18% comes from the famous John Dore pot still #1 and is aged 10 years in Bourbon. Another component, at about 34% of the blend, is from their gorgeous 2000 liter Vendome Pot Still also aged for 10 years in ex-bourbon barrels. Additionally 20% of the blend is a blended at birth mixture of these two previous components aged likewise. That leaves 10% for the fun zone, an unusual and special St Lucia agricole distilled on the John Dore and aged for 7 years in ex-bourbon. That totals 82% pot stilled rums from 7-10 years old and 18% 9-10 year old column stilled rums with about 4% of the blend having seen fresh port casks for at least 10 years. The result is a heady mix of roasted tropical fruit and rich savory leather tones. Bold fresh tobacco, subtle red vinous quality, tinges of menthol, deep roasted coffee and exotic wood tones lead to a long dry finish. This will certainly be one for the "real" rum lovers. No illusions or trickery here, just really solid rum from one of the world's great rum distillers.
