The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Grandes Grenachieres d’Hippolyte (95% Grenache and 5% miscellaneous grapes, all aged one year in tank) is a brilliant expression of Grenache. Aromas of licorice, raspberries and black cherries are followed by a full-bodied, opulently textured, complex, generous wine that satisfies both the hedonistic and intellectual senses. It should drink well for at least a decade. (RP)
Full ruby. Black raspberry, incense, potpourri and exotic spices on the intensely aromatic nose. Vibrant and precise but deeply concentrated too, offering juicy red and dark berry flavors that show liqueur-like power but an almost shockingly fresh quality as well. Finishes with gentle tannic grip and outstanding cut and persistence, leaving notes of candied red fruit and star anise behind. (JR)
