When Maker's Mark invited me out to do a custom K&L barrel of Maker's 46 (their enhanced Bourbon that sees additional aging with seasoned oak staves), I was practically itching to go; especially because I knew they were going to let us bottle the whiskey at full proof. If there's one thing we can't get enough of at K&L these days, it's high octane wheated Bourbon, especially since the Van Winkle craze of the past decade has gutted most of the available supply. Because wheated Bourbons substitute wheat for rye as the flavor grain in the mash bill, the result is a creamier and sweeter whiskey that really pops on the palate at cask strength. The really cool part about the Maker's 46 custom barrel program is that they allow you to choose between a number of different staves, three of which are exotic french oak flavors. For this barrel, we kept a high proportion of baked American oak staves (6 in total), but buttressed that sweetness with 4 seared French cuvee staves to add richness and spice rather than simply add additional sweetness. The result is a high proof wheated Bourbon that's big on the nose, supple on the palate, but drier and earthier on the finish (a la some of the older Jefferson's 18 editions of the past). While you get all that creamy wheated goodness in the middle, the French oak contrasts that supple sweetness with drier notes of toasted oak and savory spice. A great addition to the wheated bourbon selections. It is expressive and has a lot of personality with nice nose of vanilla and caramel. In the mouth it is soft and complex with a pleasant mouthfeel. There is a lot going on in this bourbon and it will be very easy to drink. A nice long finish with a hint of spice completes the package. I suggest that you drink this with a splash of water to soften it up.

Sweet, smooth, rich, and a pop of spice. When I am craving a glass of bourbon, this is what I want. The Maker's Mark 46 barrel program is so cool. It is a remarkable way to get customized casks of the most consistently delicious and available wheated Bourbon out there. The creamy palate screams out wheat and fulfills all of your hedonistic Bourbon desires. The additional American oak staves crank up that traditional vanilla flavors and the French staves combined with the high proof dial up the spicy finish. I loved the first cask we chose earlier this year for pure indulgence, but this bottling has it beat because it tickles that itch while also bringing a previously unknown depth and complexity.

Finally we have our new exclusive cask strength Maker's 46 in!!! For those who missed out on one of the best bourbons we carried earlier this year do not wait on this one. Utilizing French Oak staves in addition to the American Oak this full strength 46 showcases the same rich full bodied sweetness as our other cask but with a drier more bittersweet cocoa powder dusting to it. Full, rich and delicious in all of the right ways even the cask strength here does not overwhelm on the finish. Some water definitely helps this to open up though and allows the creamy vanilla notes to really shine.
