The 2013 First Tracks from Law Estate Wines didn’t arrive in enough time to make the Paso Robles report so I’ve opted to include it in this report. A blend of 40% Petit Verdot, 32% Syrah and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s a beautiful wine that shows plenty of Bordeaux-like character at the start, yet picks up more and more Syrah character with time in the glass. Sporting a deep purple color that’s mostly opaque, it offers gorgeous notes of blackberry jam, Asian spices, blueberries, leafy herbs and lead pencil shavings. These give way to a ripe, full-bodied, yet surprisingly elegant and seamless red that has perfect balance, hints of toasty oak, ripe, sweet tannin, and a great finish. This is blockbuster stuff and well worth checking out. It’s beautiful today, yet should keep for at least a decade.
