The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes has a tightly wound bouquet with crisp red berry fruit, wet limestone and flinty scents that are subtle at first but unfurl with just a few swirls of the glass. This has a sophisticated bouquet that keeps you engaged from first encounter. The palate is beautifully defined with superb mineralité, a little edginess developing towards the finish that shimmers with nervosité. The small amount of whole bunch fruit allows the terroir to really shine through here. This is superb and it will offer 20+ years of drinking pleasure (though I personally would afford it 3-5 years in bottle).(NM)
(from vines planted in 1957 on sandy soil near Clos de la Roche): Bright dark red. Alluring perfume of raspberry, flowers and minerals. Sweet but taut, combining a pliant texture and terrific inner-mouth energy. The wine's red fruit flavors are given added punch by a pungent mineral component. Finishes extremely long, with noble tannins. Looks to be a great vintage for this bottling. This site is better placed than Lignier's Charmes-Chambertin (actually Mazoyères) and often does spectacularly well in warmer years.(ST)
The Domaine Lignier parcel in aux Combottes was planted in 1957 and lies up at the top of the slope, so this is one of the coolest sections of a fairly cool vineyard, which certainly was not a disadvantage in the torrid summer of 2015! The wine offers up a beautifully complex bouquet of red plums, red and black cherries, raw cocoa, gamebird, a touch of mustard seed, lovely soil tones and a touch of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and beautifully soil-driven, with lovely sappiness at the core, suave, fine-grained tannins, tangy acids and excellent focus and complexity on the very long, very pure and classy finish. 2025-2065+
A more elegant expression of cool, fresh and airy aromas consists of various red berries, spice and pretty floral nuances. The sense of refinement continues onto the lilting and detailed medium weight flavors that terminate in a mildly drying finish that I suspect is more due to the abundant gas than under ripe tannins; note that my range offers the benefit of the doubt.
