The “three star” 2005 Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Auslese*** comes, as usual, largely from beneath the Urzig sundial just above the water’s edge. Aromas of pear nectar, pink grapefruit, and honey-drenched strawberry jam signal huge ripeness and noble rot, but there is also an intriguingly refreshing briney note. Rich, spicy, and honeyed on the palate with a plush yet almost chewy, dense texture, this finishes with fantastic length of spice, with layers of strawberry jam, caramelized pear, marzipan, and honey, and with a juicy flux of citrus and a bed of wet stones. It should enjoy at least 30 properous years – longer, in short, than virtually any of us are likely to hold it. (DS)
Pale golden yellow. Tangerine and apple blossom on the nose. Delicate on the palate, yet rich in spice and decidedly floral.A salty minerality rather than obvious sweetness graces the long finish, but a creamy note ensures good balance. (JP)
