This is the kind of elegant, aristocratic sangiovese that originally earned Brunello its reputation—a wine layered with scents of fruit leather, bright spice and black, mineral-inflected tannins. It’s a wine of stature rather than weight, one capable of eliciting an emotional response while providing its share of sensual pleasure.
An utterly magnificent wine, the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino graces the palate with wild flowers, violets, rose petals and dark stone fruits. Today, the 2008 is quite brooding and closed in on itself, but the pedigree is obvious in the wine's layered, deeply expressive personality. The 2008 needs time, but there is little question it is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. In 2008, Il Poggione decided against bottling their Riserva (even though that wine was magnificent from cask) so all of the best juice went into the straight bottling. (AG)
This is very harmonious and pretty and underlines the finesse of the vintage. Full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a delicious finish. Balanced and delicious. Drink now or hold.
The bright cherry and strawberry notes are enhanced by iron and earth accents in this intense, tightly wound and linear red, boasting a firm structure and a lingering aftertaste of fruit and mineral. (BS)
