This wine deserves its lofty reputation as one of Italy's premier bottlings. It opens with a gorgeous fragrance of berry, leather, truffle and spice. The palate delivers ripe and delicious black cherry, black berry, white pepper and chocolate notes accompanied by firm but refined tannins. This will age beautifully and develop complexity for decades. Drink 2016–2028. *Cellar Selection* (KO)
I like the aromas of blackberry, hazelnut and black olives. Complex and pleasing. It's full-bodied, chewy and rich. Very tannic and slightly drying but that unabridged severity makes it interesting. Drink or hold.
The 2008 Sagrantino 25 Anni is made in a style that showcases focus and length above all else. Dark cherries, tar, licorice, camphor and game are some of the notes that flow from the glass. The flavor profile bears some resemblance to Syrah, but the tannins are pure Sagrantino. This is a gorgeous wine from Caprai, but it will require a few years in bottle. (AG) 92+
Marco Caprai first made this wine in 1993, marking his family’s 25th vintage. It’s a selection from his highest vineyards (1,000 feet), aged 26 months in barrel, concentrated to the point of feeling compressed. The wine makes no excuses for its tannins, presenting them in all their power from the initial scent through to their unrelenting grip. There’s more to the wine within, though the tannins will need long aging to mellow.
Full, saturated red-ruby color. Inky black cherry, blueberry, licorice and bitter chocolate on the nose, complemented by violet and sweet spices. Dense and chewy on the palate, with outstanding intensity to its dark fruit, mineral and chocolate flavors. Finishes broad and long, with substantial building, polished tannins that coat the palate and the front teeth; seems less energetically extracted than the Collepiano, with a somewhat softer mouthfeel. Cellar this for at least five or six years. (ID) 91+
