Tasting Notes

Winery Notes: "100% Syrah from Tierra Alta Vineyard in Ballard Canyon, Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Barbara County Soils are made up of cllay with fragmented limestone. Whole-berry fermentation; matured for 25 months in French oak barrels. Just 50 cases made. The wine is bursting with black cherry, blackberry notes with cedar, vanilla and cream finish. Layered with minerality (from the limestone soils). Tierra Alta Vineyard, meaning "The High Land", is perched on top of Ballard Canyon in the Santa Ynez Valley. Ballard Canyon, because of its distinct microclimate, soils and high quality wines, was recently approved as a new AVA (American Viticulture Area) in 2013. Positioned at the top of the canyon, the vineyard has great sun exposure and the elevation of 1,200ft allows for cool nights. The warm days and cool nights promote balanced ripening of the berries and clusters. The soils are primarily composed of clay and fragmented limestone, which give the wine soft tannins and added layers of minerality. Santa Ynez Valley runs East-West with no mountain range blocking the valley from the Pacific Ocean, which enables the cool air and fog to penetrate the vineyard during the long summer days common to Santa Barbara. This is important because it allows for more even ripening and produces balanced flavors."
