Tasting Notes

Ch. L’Avocat is from the small commune of Cerons, which is located just north of Barsac and Sauternes in the southern Graves appellation. I met Nicola Allison at a small conference of Women from Bordeaux and Napa Valley in Napa earlier. She followed my advice by sending her wines to our hotel in April to be tasted, and Clyde and I liked them. I followed up by visiting the estate almost eight weeks later and was shown the gravely, plateau vineyards by her husband Sean who manages the vines. The vineyards were purchased by the Allisons in 2002; the fruit was previously sold to Mouton Rothschild. At 300 feet above the Garrone river, the vineyards have stunning views of the lovely Côtes de Bordeaux, this elevation is a key factor for great drainage, and the soil is loaded with different color gravels that impart the textbook minerality both their whites and reds feature. K&L has been selling this wine for many years and it has always earned its place on the self. The 2015 reflects the vintage with a full body and deep dark fruit flavors. This is complemented by mineral notes and a nice balance. Ready to drink now, this wine is complex and a joy to drink It will go well with hearty foods.

This wine showcases not only its appellation but the vintage as well. It is approachable, but a passage through the decanter will round it up. Cassis, brown sugar, and loads of minerality framed by firm but not at all harsh tannins. A wine to dress up any dinner.

Year in and out, the Allisons provide the world this small-production, completely estate-fruited blend for a ludicrously low price. It shows rich brambly fruit with a touch of spice, gravelly minerals. True to the vintage, it has very soft, supple tannins with great acidity on the finish.

This may be one of our greatest under $20 finds from the vintage! Don't underrate the wines of the Graves. Although the vintage was warm and many of the wines are quite big, Chateau l'Avocat has kept their wines very restrained and elegant in style. Yes, there is rich red fruit here, but it is well balanced by acidity and fine-boned tannin. The palate is loaded with red plum, cassis, baking spices, licorice, and menthol. This is a pretty little wine that will age like something of a much higher price point.

The latest version of this K&L favorite is deeply fruited, powerful and a classic bargain for the appellation. This earthy and gravely wine has a middle filled with cocoa laced dark fruit and a long stony finish showing sweet tannin. Decant this fruity and structured bargain tonight or lay a few bottles away for 5 to 10 years.
