Recently named a "Winemaker to Watch" by San Francisco Chronicle, Forlorn Hope's Matthew Rorick is dedicated to producing wines that represent an "eclectic curation of California's lesser-known and forgotten." (JB, 02/2013) The 2012 "Que Sandade" Verdelho contains fruit from two vineyards. Half comes from the DeWitt vineyard, where elevation and granite soils promote minerality and naturally fresh acidity. The other half comes from the Vista Luna Vineyard, a unique site organically farmed by Markus Bokisch, composed of gravelly loam soils with a giant quartz deposit that is said to have washed down from the Sierra Nevada mountain range millions of years ago; its surface appears to be covered with 'moon rocks'. In addition to a distinctive terroir imprint, this vineyard yields fruit with wonderful freshness, aroma, and texture. The combination is a delicious expression of Verdelho: lightly floral, with bright citrus and tropical fruit aromas and flavors. It's fleshy, but nipped in by mineral verve and naturally fresh acidity. Enjoy on its own or with a variety of foods.
