Aromas of tar, blackberries, cloves and dark chocolate. Perfumed. Full and focused with a beautiful center palate and length. Mostly from Nathan Combs in Coombsville with some Yountville-sourced fruit. Best ever. Drink or hold.
The base release is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon and it comes from multiple sites throughout the valley. It’s a killer wine and offers the classic sweet crème de cassis and blackberry fruit that's the hallmark of the vintage. With loads of richness, notes of Asian spices, pencil lead and cedar, full-bodied richness, and sweet tannin, it's already drinking beautifully yet will keep for another two decades or more.
Spot-on in varietal focus and immediately impressing with its compelling nose of cassis, creamy oak and fresh, loamy soil, this exceptionally deep effort follows up on its considerable aromatic promise with very rich and continuous flavors to match. It is solidly structured without being stern and shows a great sense of polish from beginning to end, and, even if sporting the tannins to age beautifully for six to ten years, it is remarkably involving right now. Try to resist its youthful charms and rest it in a quiet corner of the cellar lest it is drunk up before having had the chance to grow into its best. Waiting will be handsomely rewarded.
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon leaps from the glass with fresh, exuberant cassis and crushed blackberry notes plus hints of cigar box, dried Mediterranean herbs, violets and Marmite toast. Full-bodied and built like a brick house, with firm, grainy tannins and lively acid supporting the generous black berry and savory flavors, it finishes with great length and poise. It is drinking beautifully now but has the stuffing to cellar for 12+ years. (LPB)
Paul Hobbs' 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is a gorgeous wine. Beams of tannin give the wine much of its distinctive profile, but that is not especially surprising given that 55% of the fruit is sourced from Hobbs' Nathan Coombs estate. Dark cherry, plum, graphite and savory herbs are some of the signatures. Drink the 2014 over the next decade or so. The interplay of racy fruit and insistent underlying structure is compelling. Dollops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot round out the blend. (AG)
