K&L Notes

Winery Notes: "High on the slopes of Mount Veeder, Mayacamas Vineyards has been a source of legendary California wine since 1889. Since the 1950’s the vinification and élevage of Mayacamas remains remarkably consistent and our continued commitment to employ classical techniques and tools is integral to the character of these wines. The mountain terroir at Mayacamas ranges from 1,800 to 2,400 feet in elevation and the estate spans 475 acres, only 50 of which are dedicated to vine. The region’s richly intense, age-worthy wines reflect the independent spirit of its mountain growers and vintners, borne of rugged conditions that demand craftsmanship at the highest level. Savory, bright and deep, this generous wine offers black cherry, ripe blackberry, and mission fig. On the palate herb notes of star anise, marjoram and French lavender provide complexity and depth alongside the juicy bramble fruits. Secondary notes of graphite, cacao and pencil lead hint at classic wines of the old world."

An absolute classic. A benchmark. When I think of old school California Cabernet this defines it perfectly. There's a boldness and richness to the fruit that sets it apart from Bordeaux but also a very traditional, timeless expression of varietal character; cedar, pipe tobacco and mint interwoven with plum, cassis and red/black currant. The structure is defined by long-chain, firm but refined tannin. The acidity of this cool mountain fruit gives a freshness and drive not often found in valley floor wines. The poor, rocky soils and old vines also impart a distinctive dusty mineral component. A compelling and complete expression of California Cabernet and one that long ago cemented its place in the realms of world-class wines. This is a very fine release for Mayacamas as this historical property strides positively into a new era.

Famed Napa Valley winemaker Andy Erickson, formerly of Screaming Eagle, Staglin and Harlan Estate, takes the reins with the 2013 Mayacamas Cabernet, following the Estate acquisition by Terroir Capital. With Erickson's expert hand and the unique site of the high elevation Mayacamas Estate, we have a Cabernet of singular vibrancy, power and finesse. The 2013 Mt. Veeder growing season was ideal, and the wine is expressive of this in composition. Beautifully balanced and integrated, with high tone fruit aromas of bing cherry, wild raspberry and blackberry underpinned by sexy, savory leather, garrigue and anise notes, the wine shows excellent aging potential, and finishes in a long trail of rocky minerality.
