Alsace is the exception to the French tradition of naming wines after place of origin -- here varietal nomenclature is the thing. But the wines of Alsace are very French, having perhaps more in common with Burgundy than Germany. Barth Rene produces classic Alsatian wines in the village of Bennwihr. This Gewurztraminer is from the "Vogelgarten" vineyard, which is planted exclusively with Gewurztraminer. Vines grow in calcerous soils on a hillside plot with southern exposure, and are planted with a density of 4,500 to 5,000 vines per hectare. Grapes are gently pressed, then settled for 24-36 hours at cool temperatures (40F) and fermented with native yeasts. A classic dry-style Alsatian white wine, with zing and spring and spice, and then a hint of flower and honey.
