The 2016 Forêts from Domaine Michel has turned out beautifully and is an absolute classic in the making. The nose jumps from the glass in a refined blend of apple, pear, spring flowers, a touch of beeswax, complex limestone minerality and a topnote of citrus zest. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very transparent in profile, with a fine core, lovely cut and grip and a very long, elegant and snappy finish. This is as racy as the Montmains, but a step up in terms of refinement and ultimate complexity. High class juice. 2020-2040+.
An interesting if somewhat atypical nose reflects notes of orange peel and melon on the ripe orchard fruit and mineral reduction aromas. The sleek and attractively intense middle weight flavors exude a subtle minerality before terminating in a bitter lemon-inflected finish that is notably dry in the context of the 2016 vintage.
The Forêts bursts in the glass with a direct and projected bouquet of lemon, lime and white flowers, and a top note of beeswax. On the palate the wine is fuller-bodied and more ample than the Montmains, with good concentration and stony depth, and a moderately long finish. This should drink very well on release. Drinking Window 2019 - 2027. (WK)
Healthy light yellow. Ripe, bright aromas of peach and spices. Nicely concentrated wine with good lift and texture to its stone fruit, spice and saline mineral flavors. Finishes spicy, firm-edged and precise, with a touch of minerality and a late hint of pineapple. (ST)
