While they lost 60% of the harvest due to hail (the lieux-dits of Hermite and Murets were the most affected), they certainly harvest great fruit. The 2016 Ermitage Le Méal is another inky, opaque colored Hermitage and comes from one of the top terroirs in this hallowed appellation. Black raspberries, crushed flowers, white peach and hints of minerality and toasty oak all flow from this uber-rich, concentrated, utterly impeccably balanced 2016. With moderate acidity, ripe, sweet tannin and a great finish, it's one sexy beast I’d be thrilled to drink anytime over the coming 20+ years. It too is made in minuscule quantities, but will certainly be worth the effort to track down.
A brooding and tightly wound but promising nose of lapsang souchong tea leaf, fresh blackberry and liquorice. In the mouth it's monolithic, concentrated and powerful. The tannins are intense but they have an inner sweetness, remaining very savoury and saline on the finish nonetheless. This wine is straight in profile, and full of energy and freshness with exceptional length. (MW)
Ferraton's top wine in 2016 is the outstanding 2016 Ermitage Le Méal. Full-bodied, creamy and rich, it blends black raspberry fruit with notes of mocha and vanilla. Lush and long, it's surprisingly approachable but should easily age through 2030. (JC)
