A cool, pure and even spicier nose speaks of black cherry, violet, lavender and orange peel. The juicy, round and highly seductive medium-bodied flavors brim with sappy dry extract that also buffers the slightly firm tannins on the sneaky long finish. This excellent effort is very Vosne in character and should also drink well young as well as repay up to a decade of cellaring.
The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Clos d’Eugenie includes 60% whole cluster fruit and three of the seven barrels are new. It has a very detailed bouquet that for me is a distinct level up from the village cru. The whole cluster contribution is barely tangible, merely lending freshness and another layer of complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with a pastille-like purity on the entry. There is good density and body here, perhaps the new oak speaking just a bit too loudly on the finish but otherwise well balanced, notwithstanding that the oak will be assimilated with time. It will deserve 3, maybe 4 years in bottle. (NM)
(production here was 30 hectoliters per hectare, which winemaker Michel Mallard describes as "the closest to normal" in 2016; this wine and the following cuvées were vinified with 60% whole clusters): Bright medium-dark red. Aromas of black cherry and licorice are lifted by a suave floral element. Juicy, spicy and intense, with a positive hint of greenness energizing the dark fruit and mineral flavors. A step up in punch from the basic Vosne villages, this sappy midweight finishes with excellent length and lift. (ST)
