Coming from the Col Solare and Quintessence vineyards on Red Mountain, the 2013 Proprietary Red is a rich, fabulously textured, full-bodied effort the has tons of black cherry and cassis fruits intermixed with notes of licorice, smoked herbs, graphite and lead pencil aromas and flavors. Made from a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot and 2% Malbec that spent 22 months in 100% new French oak, drink this pure, layered and polished Red Mountain Bordeaux blend over the coming 15-20 years. Bright medium ruby. Claret-like aromas of raspberry, currant and spices lifted by a floral quality. Juicy, spicy and intense, with well-delineated red berry and mineral flavors sweetened by spicy oak. Finishes with a firm spine of broad, dusty tannins and excellent length. Very classy wine. (ST)
Cabernet Sauvignon (88%) takes the lead on this wine, with the balance Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah. Aromas of blackberry, blue fruit, flowers and barrel spice are followed by pitch-black-fruit flavors. Lightly chewy tannins provide some heft but have room to broaden.
About 40 percent of this 2013 comes from Col Solare’s estate on Red Mountain; it’s mostly cabernet, and quite delicious, with candied plum and black cherry scents, cedary oak and a lush, generous core of fruit. The tannins feel supple and firm at once. For the cellar.
