Deep saturated red. Crushed raspberry, black cherry and licorice on the nose, accented by hints of underbrush. Suave and densely packed, offering impressive weight and palate presence to the lightly saline flavors of raspberry, boysenberry, violet and minerals. Wonderfully refined, precise and deep, and already showing remarkable flavor interest for young Brunello. The finish is long and features repeating hints of juicy raspberry. Another knockout Brunello from Sestidisopra, a small and little-known Brunello producer that in my book rates among the best of the best.
Elegantly scented, this fragrant red opens with scents of perfumed berry, iris, pipe tobacco and exotic spice. The vibrant linear palate evokes juicy cranberry, sour cherry and star anise framed in tightly wound fine-grained tannins while bright acidity provides balance. A savory saline note lingers on the finish. Drink 2023–2033. (KOK)
A red with plenty of ripe and floral fruit on the nose as well as orange peel and cherry. Full body, linear and very fine with beautiful fruit. White pepper, too. Shows energy. Drink in 2021.
Dark and mysterious, this red offers plum, black cherry, leather, leafy tobacco and tar flavors. Fresh and lifted up by a layer of beefy tannins, lingering with a spicy, underbrush aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2038 (BS)
The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino shows impressive balance with a dark appearance that is not heavy and a compact texture that remains light and elegant all at once. Bold cherry fruit segues to licorice, tar and tangy cedar wood. The wine is silky and fresh with moderate to long persistence. (ML)
With just a single hectare of Brunello vineyards in the southern reaches between Sant'Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell'Abate, Sesta di Sopra produces a mere 4,000 bottles. Vinification is traditional, with long macerations and ageing in large Slavonian botti. It is a full, rich expression with underlying iron, leather, plum and liquorice flavours. Substantial tannins support the wine, which will give at least a decade of drinking pleasure. (MM)
Mid to deep ruby. Not very expressive on the nose and with a hint of smoke. Focused cherry fruit with powdery tannins. Reluctant to open up. Gripping, long finish paired with a certain lightness of touch. (WS)
