Tasting Notes

This limited edition Jefferson's Ocean Voyage is the first and only wheated bourbon to be aged at sea and visit five separate continents before being bottled. Jefferson's Bourbon has always been a producer focused on innovation, and the Ocean Voyage program is perhaps their most ambitious yet. They've had incredible success with the very unusual aging regime and this is easily the best we've tried yet. Something about the soft sweetness of the wheated mashbill and the tangy saline of the ocean influence work absolute wonders. This is one of the most exciting and delicious new wheated bourbons released in some time. With the popularity of the Van Winkle and Weller brands, wheated bourbon has become all the rage. But simply removing the rye from a mashbill doesn't inherently make a whiskey better; it actually makes it less flavorful. Buffalo Trace has mastered the art of crafting wheated bourbons, but some of the new wheaters don't hold up to the hype. The Jefferson's Ocean lays an entirely new set of flavors on top of the familiar wheated profile. It's hard to say exactly where Jefferson's is getting the juice, but they've recently purchased nearly $4 million worth of Bourbon so one would assume the source is of the highest quality. Expect a nose of rich salted caramel, rich vanilla, and sea spray. The most obvious sea influence we've seen on one of these since Voyage #1. On the palate it’s ultra dense and viscous with sweet corn bread and barrel spice balancing the saline.

We've always enjoyed the Ocean Voyage even if the slightly higher cost seemed a touch gimmicky. It's really solid bourbon with that little salty twang, but to be honest the spicy side of the rye mashbill kind of masked any serious ocean influence. Now the softer sweeter Wheated Bourbon is really suited for embracing the subtle influence of the ocean aging. They've obviously started with really solid bourbon, which is the key to the success of any of these "innovative" bourbon products. That whiskey, whose origin remains a secret, could come from any of the many high quality wheat producers, although it seems to be distilled in Kentucky. The special wheated mashbill offers a much more supple and rounded whiskey from the start and the sweetness balances out the briny background note perfectly without masking the subtle ocean influence. That influence comes from journey unlike any other in modern bourbon production. Visiting more than 30 ports and crossing the equator 4 times, the whiskey is subjected to some of the most extreme heat and humidity our planet has to offer. The resulting whiskey is one of the most lovable little whiskies Jefferson has released in years. It might not have the pedigree of the old age stated stuff, but I would challenge anyone to argue that isn't more enjoyable than any special release from this great little producer in the last several years. Like all the Ocean Voyage's a portion of the proceeds go to Ocearch for the study and preservation of shark's in the North Atlantic. So, you can drink well and do good at the same time.

Getting any kind of wheated bourbon is becoming increasingly difficult, so of course, the innovators at Jefferson set out to make one that was even more unique. The primary flavours here are everything one wants in a heavily wheated bourbon, soft rich vanilla, baking spice, notes of cream and caramel. What the voyage does is add a layer of salty goodness to all of the richness, mingling in all that richness is a salt water taffy note that is absolutely spectacular. This is one of those offerings that I do not expect to last long.

Been dreaming of a vacation? Maybe some sort of Caribbean cruise? Why spend thousands on tickets when you can get a little taste of the salty sea air, literally, with this fabulous whiskey. Jefferson's Ocean Voyage 15 is all you need for a little stay-cation. Almonds, vanilla, weathered wood, lemon peel, and, of course, delicious brine, all come through in full force on the nose. Smooth and round on the palate, beautifully balanced by a sharp edge, this bourbon feels alive on the taste buds. The wheated recipe, unique to this edition, make for a slightly fruitier and maltier flavor profile. As for the barrels themselves, they are stored on a ship, which exposes them to much more heat and movement (and salty sea air) than they would in a traditional, boring, and immobile warehouse. The result is increased wood to juice contact, creating a full-bodied gem worth going over-board about! And with almost 17 drinks worth in each bottle (according to the standard 1.5 oz shot), you can make the feeling of vacation last!

This is a pretty and delicious bourbon. I tasted it with and without water and both times it was a pleasure to drink. There is a beautiful balance between the soft vanilla over tones and burnt sugar flavors. It is round and easy and there is a long finish. This is the best Jefferson Ocean that I have tasted. For those who are searching for a wheated bourbon this bottling should be on the top of your list.
