The 2016 Saint Joseph La Croix Des Vignes offers lots of violet characteristics as well as perfumed notes of black raspberries, spice, pepper, and gaminess. There’s a certain Côte Rôtie vibe here, and it’s beautifully concentrated, ripe and sexy on the palate. It’s going to drink nicely on release and keep for 10-15 years.
(20% new oak) Deep lurid ruby. Vibrant black raspberry, cola and mineral aromas are complemented by an exotic Moroccan spice accent. Palate-staining black and blue fruit liqueur flavors show excellent depth and focus, and hints of licorice and salty olive paste build in the glass. Sweet and seamless on the impressively long, incisive finish, which echoes the blue fruit note; subtle, harmonious tannins lend gentle grip. (JR)
