The 1996 Cardinale is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot, of which 62% came from Napa and 38% from Sonoma. Just under 3,000 cases were produced. It is also a top rank wine, and a star of the vintage. A saturated purple color is followed by licorice, cedar, fruit cake, and black currant aromas. Full-bodied, powerful, and concentrated, with low acidity but high tannin, this young, muscular classic should have fabulous aging potential. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2028. (RP)
Full ruby-red. Bordeaux-like aromas of roasted plum, currant, smoke and tobacco. Lush, pliant and expressive; doesn't possess quite the grip, structure or length of the '97 but this is smooth and captivating. Finishes with fine tannins and very good length.
Sleek, intense and concentrated, showing earthy currant, cedary oak and blackberry, with a hint of soy and a touch of earthiness. Complex and long on the finish, with subtle nuances that end with a gravelly edge. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. (JL, Web-2007)
