Good deep red, with some amber at the rim. High-toned aromas of plum, game, leather, chocolate and mint. Supple and sweet, with a plump middle but only moderate depth of flavor. Slightly astringent on the finish, which offers good but not outstanding length. One of the better efforts from this weak vintage. Ready to drink.
Starts out with earthy, gamy, leathery flavors, then turns supple and polished, with complex anise, currant, berry, mushroom and cedar notes. Shows more sweet-tasting fruit and balance than most '88s.--1988 California Cabernet retrospective.
