While many of California's young wineries, especially those in the Napa Valley, chose to focus their energy on Cabernet Sauvignon, Dan and Margaret Duckhorn bucked the trend, devoting a lot of energy to Merlot as a stand-alone wine, not just as a blending grape. The Three Palms was Duckhorn's first vineyard-designated Merlot back in 1978, and it has remained an age-worthy classic in their portfolio vintage after vintage.
