Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The most impressive Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon to date, this wine exhibits wonderful black-raspberry, vanillin, smokiness in its bouquet. Full-bodied and loaded with flavor, it displays fine length, balance, and purity. Approachable now, it promises to be at its best in 4-5 years and last for 15 or more. Bravo! (RP)
Young, firm, tannic and leathery, showing toasty new oak notes, but also a nice core of currant and spice flavors that stays with you on the finish. Needs time to soften and develop, but has all the right ingredients.
This is an early vintage from the revival of a Napa Valley classic. Did you know that Far Niente was founded in 1885 by the uncle of famous American impressionist painter, Winslow Homer? More from the winery: "Far Niente prospered until the onset of Prohibition in 1919, when it was abandoned and left to fall into disrepair. Sixty years later, in 1979, Gil Nickel purchased the winery and adjacent vineyard and began a three-year restoration of the property." The Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon is the only wine that has ever been produced from the Stelling vineyard, planted in 1978 on gravelly soils at the base of the western hills of Oakville.
