Produced from a vineyard situated in the eastern hills above the famed hotel/restaurant Auberge de Soleil, this impressive, saturated ruby/purple-colored Cabernet offers copious amounts of jammy black cherry fruit as well as earthy/underbrush notes. The oak plays a subtle role in this full-bodied wine with outstanding extract, excellent purity, and an earthy, cassis-dominated finish. If more complexity develops, it will merit an outstanding score.
Stern tannins are evident from the outset, giving it a dry, chewy texture. The fruit behind it veers toward the tart cherry and currant spectrum of Cabernet, and it's likely the tannins will always play a prominent role in this wine. Still, for those who like chewy Cabernets, here's your cup.--1995 California Cabernet retrospective. (Web-2005)
