Good medium red, with a hint of amber at the rim. Very aromatic, inviting nose of redcurrant, leather and tobacco. Intensely flavored and gripping, with a slightly raisiny singed plum character but also solid framing acidity that gives the wine a juicy quality. Quite fat and full. Finishes with superb structure and grip. (ST)
Back in this era, it was not uncommon for estates to bottle a vintage over the course of some time, and the ’82 Calon has shown a bit of bottle variation over the course of my experience. As was discussed around our table at the Washington vertical, many of us had tasted even better bottles of the 1982 Château Calon-Ségur than those on display that evening, and I would guess that our bottles at this tasting were from a different bottling run, as it was not quite as vibrant and was missing its red fruity component that the best recent bottles I have tasted of this wine have possessed. That said, this is still a very strong glass of claret, offering up a deep and complex nose of black cherries, cassis, cigar ash, powdered stone minerality, incipient notes of chipotle peppers, a touch of walnut, cigar smoke and espresso. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite plush on the attack, with a fine core, melting tannins and impressive length and grip on the complex and very long finish. This a very good wine, but pristine bottles are even more red fruity and precise and merit at least another two to three points. (Drink between 2014-2040)
The Château Calon-Ségur 1982 continues to be a delightful fully mature Saint Estephe. It has a similar bouquet to the bottle tasted in Hong Kong in 2012, with Chinese tea and leather, roasted herbs and here, just a suggestion of cocoa. The palate is medium-bodied but fuller than the Batailley 1982, tasted alongside. It exerts a gentle grip and like last time, perhaps there is a hint of brettanomyces towards the finish. But otherwise, this continues to drink well, albeit in an old-fashioned way. If you can abide a bit of rusticity in your 1982 Claret, then this Calon-Ségur will fit the bill. Tasted July 2014. (NM)
