This wine shows fabulous aromas of stones and flowers with dried fruits and spices. It’s subtle yet full with ultra-fine tannins and a gorgeous, long finish.
I had not tasted the ’82 Canon in several years and I was very impressed with how much more open this wine is today than when I last had it. I would still lean towards giving it more time in the cellar, just to allow more complexity to emerge, but for those with a nice cache of the wine in their collections, it really is starting to drink awfully well at age twenty-eight. The bouquet is deep and stunning, as it offers up scents of red and black cherries, menthol, cigar smoke, incipient notes of the nutskin, a great base of soil, a bit of mocha and a nice topnote of chipotle peppers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure, with a rock solid core of fruit, ripe, melting tannins, impeccable balance and great grip on the very long, complex and superb finish. A great vintage of Canon. (Drink between 2010-2060) 94+
Shows mint, black tea, sous-bois and sandalwood notes that are distinctive and alluring. Long and refined on the finish, with supple black cherry and boysenberry fruit gliding throughout. Wins mostly on aroma, but there's still sneaky depth and length here. Lovely.--Non-blind Canon vertical (December 2016). Drink now through 2022. (JM, Web-2017)
Tasted a the Château Canon vertical, the 1982 Canon is clearly fully mature on the nose, so much so that I have a sneaking suspicion that it may have passed its peak. But there is still plenty to savor here with leather, fresh prune and game, perhaps just a little volatility but not too much. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy on the entry with good acidity, sweeter and more candied than the 1989 Canon. It offers black cherries, raspberry coulis, leather, sage and tobacco, coalescing nicely towards the finish that lingers. There is a game-like and feral aspect to this 1982 these days, though it will continue to give pleasure over the next decade. Tasted October 2015. (NM)
Good full red. Superripe aromas of roasted red fruits, chocolate and minerals. Dense, rich and chocolatey, but still youthfully vibrant and full of life. Classy and deep, with a complicating nutty note. A solidly structured wine that finishes with firm, ripe tannins and lovely persistence. Should last well. (ST)
Soft and appealing with real mineral notes. Very fruity and ready. Gentle, beguiling texture. 17.5/ 20 points.
