Produced from a blend of various small plots, the 1998 Zinfandel Old Vines displays opulence, but reveals an earthy, peppery, dried herb component to its dense black cherry, plum, and raspberry fruit. A delicious, round wine, it is best drunk over the next 4-5 years.
Medium-deep ruby-red. Blackberry, black pepper, shoe polish and a hint of prune on the nose. Smooth and moderately ripe, with good depth of flavor and ripe balancing acids. Finishes firmly tannic, with spicy persistence. This bottling includes some Howell Mountain fruit, which has given it shape and tannic spine.
