One of the riper, more exotic wines of the vintage, this gushes with black currant, fig and blackberry fruit, all of which has melded together and is starting to show a corrupt edge, while the sweet bacon, spice, mesquite and clove-studded blood orange notes fill out the background. The long, very juicy finish is multilayered and supported by fresh acidity. Drink now through 2027.
The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reserve showed the warmth and richness of the vintage, with knockout kirsch and blackberry fruit, garrigue, game and leather aromas and flavors that literally come jumping from the glass. Full-bodied, rich, textured and beautifully focused, if not still structured, it’s a rock-star to drink through 2020 or so. (JD)
Saturated ruby. Liqueur-like kirsch and framboise aromas; superripe but not pruney. Very rich, deep flavors of sweet red fruits; still a bit youthfully aggressive but boasts terrific buffering volume. The strong but fine tannins reach the entire mouth. Has 2.4 grams per liter of residual sugar but does not come across as sugary, just ripe in a major way.
