This was served with the 1996 and pigeon and foie gras in a little flaky pastry medallion. It looked a bit more developed than the 1996 at the rim. Ruby with a hint of age at the rim. Firm and dry and nearing its apogee. Very fresh and clean. Lively and racy. Xavier Borie commented, '1999 was not considered a top vintage - it hasn't got that much power but it has elegance and structure. Our wines always have balance and freshness'.
This deep ruby/purple-colored 1999 has some tannin to resolve, but it is an elegant, medium-bodied, delicious effort that will reward readers who have the patience to cellar it for several years. It is not a blockbuster in the style of the 2000 or 1996, but the 1999 offers charming roundness, sweet cassis fruit, excellent purity, and fine overall balance. (RP)
Medium red. Black cherry, minerals and graphite on the nose. Lush, full and sweet, with quintessential Pauillac flavors of currant, lead pencil and shoe polish. Has good buffering fat for its substantial tannins. (ST)
