One of the more distinctive wines in the lineup is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. From a famous site in Oakville, it offers a much more spice-filled, perfumed, complex style than the Las Piedras Vineyard, has a full-bodied, opulent, yet weightless texture, sweet tannin and a great, great finish. This tour de force in Napa Cabernet has no hard edges, gorgeous aromas of crème de cassis, white chocolate, Asian spice and dried flowers, polished tannin, and perfect balance, all suggesting it’s going to keep for 2-3 decades.
This is very To Kalon with opulent fruit. Underlying chili and spice character, too. Wet earth and bark. Full body, firm and silky tannins. Racy and focused. A balanced and beautiful red from this great vintage. Drink in 2021.
Not surprisingly, another killer effort is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard from Oakville. It is a more spicy, less earthy and mineral-laced wine than the Missouri Hopper, but it has profound richness, oodles of crème de cassis and blackberry fruit intermixed with barbecue smoke, Christmas fruitcake and cedar. It is opaque purple, full-bodied and ideal for drinking over the next 25-30 years. (RP)
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon is another wine where all the best elements of the Alpha Omega house style come together. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that this is especially pedigreed fruit. Inky, sweet and generous, with soft contours and spherical fruit, the 2014 hits all the right notes. Mocha, espresso, licorice and sweet spice add the closing shades of nuance. Large-scaled and ample on the palate, the 2014 needs a few years to come into its own, but it is already very impressive. This goes for succulence and richness, a supple heavyweight of a wine. The fruit is red and floral, the tannins muscular when they’re not being driven by the chocolate intensity of oak. There’s substantial sweetness here, as well as salty mineral savor—a contemporary Napa Valley luxury wine.
Slowly unwinds from a taut core of blackberry and wild berry flavors to ease into a more agreeable show of fruit and texture. There's no denying the strength of the tannins and the structure, yet the fine flavors promise to reward with time. Best from 2020 through 2024. (JL)
Very dark fruits of blackberry and black licorice. Hot stones. Full body, rich and layered with dusty tannins and a nice acid punch at the end. Needs another five or six years to come around. Better in 2021.
From their estate-owned property in Rutherford, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Thomas Vineyard is a more structured wine for a 2014, but loaded with abundant blue and black fruits, some graphite, licorice and tobacco leaf. It is dense, full-bodied, and probably better with several more years of bottle age. It is a 25- to 30-year wine at the very minimum. (RP) 95+
Vibrant, deep, rich and polished, with loamy currant, dark berry, licorice and cedary oak elements, ending with fresh, chewy tannins. This is well-integrated, a good sign of better things to come. Best from 2019 through 2032. (JL)
