A discreet touch of wood sets off an expansive nose of ripe and spicy dark berry fruit, animale hints and intense earth and underbrush notes that can also be found on the concentrated, intense and well-muscled flavors that are also blessed with unbelievable dry extract that lends a chewy but not rustic character to the vibrant, harmonious and strikingly long finish. This is very tightly structured with dense but fine tannins that are completely buffered by all of the dry extract yet it's abundantly clear that this will be a long distance runner. A wine that has that rare "wow" factor.
Nutty, very intriguing indeed. Confident, tightly focussed. Firm, slightly smoky on the nose with an extraordinary weight of fruit undereneath. Wonderful healthy gloss – an impression of polished chestnuts/ Very fine tannins. Refined, vigorous, lots of energy. He thinks the wine is much less rugged than usual. 18.5/20 points (JR)
From 65-year-old vines whose 100 cases worth of fruit Dugat didn’t de-stem, the 2005 Mazis-Chambertin displays even more intensity, yet also elegance than the Charmes. Aromas of black cherry, purple plum, sassafras, vanilla, and violets usher in a palate of sumptuous richness, intense sweet purity of black fruits with a caramel edge, and layers of raw and roasted meat and chalky, stony minerality. This offers incredible lift and refinement for a wine of such ripeness and sheer density and the finish seems to defy gravity. (DS)
Deep ruby-red. Knockout nose offers blackberry, violet, minerals and smoked meat; combines an almost liqueur-like ripeness with high notes of eucalyptus and menthol. Extremely suave and silky in the mouth, with a fine-grained texture and terrific energy and harmony. At once thick and bright, with powerful extract and superb structure. Perhaps most impressive today on the back half, which features building, palate-staining flavor and a real aromatic whiplash on the end. Tannins are thoroughly buffered by the wine's fruit. (ST)
