2013 de Montille Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (qty: 2)
The whole cluster vinification is clearly in evidence as here the nose is intensely floral with ample spice and tea elements adding breadth to the cool and pure mélange of both red and dark pinot fruit. The mouth feel of the medium weight plus flavors is impressively refined in large part thanks to the dense but fine tannins that shape the lingering and wonderfully persistent finish. De Montille has consistently done a very fine job with his Clos de Vougeot and 2013 will only add to that growing string of successes.
The 2013 Clos Vougeot, which is two-thirds whole-cluster fruit (although you cannot tell one bit on the nose) was raised in 40% new wood. It has a tightly-knit bouquet with brambly black fruit and just a touch of undergrowth coming through with aeration. The palate is smooth and harmonious, a little sinewy at the moment and tightly wound on the finish where I would like to see it develop more delineation once in bottle. This is quite a "burly" Clos de Vougeot with good grip at the moment. Give this three or four year’s bottle age. (NM)
Bright, deep red. Medicinal cherry, wild herbs, licorice and a whiff of menthol on the nose: very Clos Vougeot. Juicy and intense but quite tight in the early going, hiding its personality today. Showed a creamier middle and rather suave tannins with aeration but this rather elegantly styled Clos Vougeot will nonetheless require patience. (ST)
