Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2014 Pierre Gonon Saint-Joseph (94JS, (93-94VN), 90RP). James Suckling: "This has coal, smoke and iodine with sanguine stony minerals and a very peppery edge on the nose. Don't miss the black cherries, plums, slate and intense dark chocolate either. The palate is crunchy, lithe, really juicy and there's a compact smooth and slinky feel to the tannins. Well-grounded, compressed and composed texture. There's a stony hint on the finish. Long. Needs time best from 2019." (10/2016)

Opaque ruby. A heady, smoke- and spice-tinged bouquet evokes fresh dark fruits, olive paste and potpourri, while an olive nuance comes up slowly. Fine-grained and sharply focused on the palate, offering concentrated black and blue fruit flavors that spread out and become spicier on the back half. Powerful yet graceful in character, finishing with outstanding energy and smooth, harmonious tannins that fold quickly into the wine's energetic fruit. (JR)
The 2014 Saint Joseph features some herbal and green olive aromas. It’s frankly not that fruity and is wiry in build, but it still gives plenty of pleasure. It offers complexity, balance and elegance rather than ripeness and power. (JC)
