Of the 2017 Sine Qua Non "The Gorgeous Victim" California Grenache,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "Medium garnet-purple, this young, bombastic Grenache explodes from the glass with the most incredible perfume: red roses, cinnamon stick, lilacs and crushed black cherries with chocolate box, aniseed, garrigue and dried herbs plus gentle waves of lavender, dusty soil and smoked meats. Full-bodied with an incredibly silky texture, the decadently fruited palate features amazing freshness and vibrancy, finishing with stacks of flavor layers and a provocatively savory/chewy lift coming from the use of whole cluster. Just. Magic. It is anticipated that 1225 cases and 600 magnums will be bottled. (LPB)" (06/2

Not yet bottled, the 2017 Grenache The Gorgeous Victim is based on 76% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, 9% Syrah, and the rest Petite Sirah and Viognier. It saw 46% stems (mostly for the Grenache) and will spend 23 months in just 23% new French oak. This full-bodied, gorgeous effort sports a saturated purple hue as well as blockbuster notes of spice box, ground pepper, red currants, and hints of cured meats. This classic, powerful Grenache from Krankl is flawlessly balanced, has plenty of tannins, and delivers a great finish. While it’s going to provide plenty of pleasure in its youth, it will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age.
The 2017 Grenache The Gorgeous Victim is even better from bottle than it was from barrel. It needs quite a bit of time to be at its best, so decanting is required in order for the wine to unleash all of its profound beauty. The aromatics alone are breathtaking. Varietal Grenache notes build as this stunning wine shows off its remarkable pedigree. Inky red fruit, blood orange and sweet floral notes are all laced into the wonderfully deep finish. The 2017 is 76% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, 9% Syrah, 3.8% Petite Sirah and 1.2% Viognier, vinified with 46% whole clusters, from Cumulus, The Third Twin Estate Vineyard, Eleven Confessions and Molly Aïda (all estate ranches, and just a dollop of fruit from Bien Nacido. Not yet bottled, the 2017 Syrah Hated Hunter looks to be another magical wine from this estate, which has produced an incredible number of truly profound wines over the coming 10-15 years. Made from 82.4% Syrah, 7.8% Petite Sirah, and the rest Mourvèdre, Grenache, Viognier, and Petit Manseng, it will spend 23 months or so in 59% new French oak. My notes are sprinkled with a few expletives, but it does everything right, offering incredible purity of fruit, notes of white flowers, cured meats, spice box, and blackcurrants, full-bodied richness, and a seamless texture. It shows the pretty, perfumed, ripe style of the vintage yet is flawlessly balanced. The 2017s have a touch of the 2015 structure and austerity, so plan on 4-5 years of bottle age.
Deep garnet-purple, this nascent Syrah-dominant blend pings exuberantly out of the glass with a veritable POP—offering expressive notes of chocolate-covered cherries, blueberry compote, licorice, violets, black licorice, spice cake and tilled earth with hints of wild sage and tar. Full-bodied, super concentrated and wonderfully savory in the mouth, it features firm, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing very long and perfumed. 1,800 cases and 600 magnums will be bottled. The 2017 Syrah The Hated Hunter is a dense, powerful wine. Super-ripe black cherry, leather, spice and licorice are all amplified by the warmth of the year, which is very much felt. Unctuous, exotic and flamboyant to the core, the 2017 offers tons of immediacy if a bit less of the delineation found in more balanced years. Then again, that is 2017. (AG)
