Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2008 Domaine Henri Boillot Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (93ST, 92BH, 92RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated, bright red-ruby. Expressive, ripe aromas of black cherry, pepper, and a whiff of leather. Full, sweet and harmonious, with great lift and definition to its sappy black cherry and licorice flavors. Really compellingly sweet and palate-coating for a 2008. The fine-grained tannins contribute to the impression of precision on the explosive, vibrant back end. Boillot told me he did a selection in 2008 but that it was to eliminate pink grapes, as there was almost no rot. (ST)" (03/2011)

Here the reduction, while present, is less obvious and more of a background nuance and does not materially detract from the ripe and earthy dark fruit aromas that precede the full-bodied, concentrated and powerful flavors and while the reduction also resurfaces on the long finish, it is quite subtle. My score awards the benefit of the doubt that the reduction will either naturally dissipate or will be able to be dissipated by a thorough aeration.
Tasted blind at Fine & Rare Wine’s Clos-Vougeot horizontal. Henri Boillot’s Clos Vougeot sports a deep garnet colour. There is certainly a lot of oak on the nose with an odd, chlorine note coming through. The palate has a vibrant, sorbet-like entry, good extraction and maceration here, though not as “natural” as other Clos Vougeot ‘08s. But there is a good level of freshness and vigour, with attractive ‘swirls’ of dark cherry and iodine on the finish that just lacks some typicite. Although I am not as eulogistic as in January, this will still turn out to be a top class Clos Vougeot. (NM)
Dark crimson. Liquorice and other appealing notes on the nose. Lots of sweet, luscious fruit on the front palate. Smooth texture. Very beguiling. I’d love to see this attractive wine a little cooler. 18/20 points (JR)
