2012 Castello di Amorosa "Don Thomas Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (qty: 4)
It is hard to call this wine subdued, yet, when compared to its slightly more robust mates, it is not quite as outgoing and is a little less aggressive in style. It is, all the same, a very precise and carefully crafted Cabernet with a fine sense of fruity reserve, and, if showing the firm, tannic structure of an eminently ageworthy wine, it steers well clear of toughness. Its teasing touches of sweet oak and minerally nuances foreshadow increased complexity with age, and it should start showing its best in four or five years. *Two Stars*
Deceptively medium in body, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Don Thomas Vineyard packs a serious punch. The flavors are dark and bold to the core, with plenty of black fruit, smoke, iron and spices woven throughout. A long, persistent finish rounds things out nicely. (AG)
A chewy young Cabernet with dark berry, blueberry and coffee character. Full body and slightly bitter wood undertone but shows fruit and style.
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Don Thomas Vineyard comes from a site on the western Mayacamas hillsides, not far from Rutherford. This cuvée exhibits more blackberry, cassis and graphite notes as well as medium to full body, attractive pure fruit, and a forward, luscious personality. (RP)
On the western edge of the appellation, this vineyard provides a juicy, dusty core of full-bodied tannins and black cherry, a generous expression of ripe fruit with a complex edge. It finishes with touches of broth and tomato leaf. (VB)
