Of the 2010 Philip Togni "Estate" Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon,Vinous writes: "After going through a period of post-bottling dormancy, Philip Togni's 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon has really begun to show well from bottle over the last six months or so. Of course, the 2010 is far too young to deliver maximum pleasure, but it is nevertheless superb tonight. Beams of acidity and tannin give energy to the dark fruit and its accompanying floral/savory/mineral overtones. The 2010 is a classic Philip Togni wine that will thrill readers who appreciate classically built Cabernets. Recent bottles from the early 1990s and 2000s show just how much t

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is stunningly beautiful and seductive in its red fruit, mint and tobacco. This is a surprisingly accessible vintage for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Today it looks like an excellent choice for readers who want to explore the wines of this iconic producer--as long as it doesn't close down in bottle. Togni's 2009 is notable for its exceptional elegance, finesse and pedigree. There is plenty of Spring Mountain structure, but today the 2009 is disarmingly sexy and radiant for such a young wine. The 2009 Togni Cabernet Sauvignon is showing superb potential out of barrel, as it offers up a deep, complex and classy bouquet of dark berries, cassis, cigar smoke, a touch of youthful bell pepper, a hint of tar, lovely soil tones and a refined base of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and strikingly pure on the attack, with a fine mid-palate depth, superb balance, ripe tannins and a very classy profile on the very long, youthful finish. This will be a superb bottle in the fullness of time. 94+
The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a gorgeous wine that is just entering its first plateau of maturity. Gorgeous aromatics frame this attractive, mid-weight Cabernet. Grilled herbs, cedar, menthol, lavender and anise add layers of complexity as this silky, gracious Cabernet opens up. Readers can look forward to another decade plus of very fine drinking. (AG)
Wild aromas of redcurrant, tobacco, meat, mocha and cedar, with a whiff of pepper (another sample that had been open for 72 hours took on a somewhat darker fruit character). A very smooth and suave midweight, with ripe acidity giving definition and energy to the mid-palate. Not a particularly fleshy style of 2009 but wonderfully balanced wine, with a firmness from the addition of the press wine. The long finish features big but supple tannins. This wine may well merit a higher rating with six or seven years of bottle aging. (ST) 92+
The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon impresses for its length and total class. Mocha, game, smoke, graphite and plums are all supported by veins of cool, insistent minerality. This isn’t a blockbuster Cabernet, rather it is a wine that impresses for its finesse and precision. Sweet red cherries, mint, pencil shavings and violets are some of the notes that are layered into the super-refined finish. As always, Togni’s Cabernet Sauvignon is distinguished for an extraordinary bouquet that recalls some of the great wines of the Medoc and the structure to age gracefully for years. It will be interesting to see if the 2010 blossoms in bottle. (AG) 95+
Musky but precise scents of dark mountain berries, wild herbs, violet and spices; a distinctly wild style of Cabernet. Uncompromisingly dry yet surprisingly supple on entry, then intense, sharply delineated and alive in the middle palate, showing a repeating pungent wild herb quality to its intense dark berry flavors. Not at all a sweet style but subtle and extremely long, with the tannins remarkably suave for mountain fruit. There's a peppery, savory energy here that I love but also plenty of body and palate presence. Finishes with terrific lift and emerging notes of leather and pine needles. A bit sauvage and idiosyncratic, this Cabernet is the full Togni. Boasts outstanding potential longevity. (ST)
Brambly dark berries, violet, licorice, pepper and herbs on the nose, complicated by high notes of dusty spices and suggestions of coffee and mocha torrefaction. Sweet and intensely flavored, with excellent balancing acidity giving lift to the dense, complex boysenberry, blueberry, violet, pepper and bitter chocolate flavors. Like Margaux made on a mountain. The resounding finish features a hint of tobacco leaf and a surprisingly light touch. A knockout in the making, but lay this down for at least a decade. (ST) 94+
The 2010 Cabernet from the Togni family is outstanding, with a bit more early intensity than is evident in the more tightly-knit 2011 version. The mountain Cabernet roots of this wine are quite evident in its fine and still quite primary bouquet of cassis, dark berries, stony soil tones, cigar smoke, tobacco leaf and a nice framing of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nascently complex, with a rock solid core of fruit, ripe, chewy tannins, lovely delineation and balance and a very long, youthful and superb finish. This will be an excellent vintage for this bottling. 93+
