Of the 2003 Clos Saint Jean "Combe des Fous" Châteauneuf-du-Pape,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "A big, ripe and voluptuous effort, the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Combe des Fous is thrilling stuff that's drinking beautifully. Incense, exotic pepper, cedar and spice are all supported by a ripe core of sweet kirsch and blackberry fruit. It's full-bodied, rich, textured and voluptuous on the palate. Showing no signs of over-ripeness or astringency, with polished tannin and excellent mid-palate depth, it pumps out loads of fruit on the finish, and should be consumed over the coming handful of years... A big, ripe and voluptuous effort, the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Combe des Fous is thrilling stuff that's drinking beautifully. As to the Combe des Fous release, this cuvée comes from a single plot of vines and is based largely on Grenache, with roughly 20% Syrah and 10% each of Vaccarese and Cinsault in the blend. The Grenache is aged all in tank and the other components see time in mostly demi-muids. While the Deux ex Machina always impresses more with its overt power and muscle, this cuvee always seems more polished, fine and elegant to me. (JD)
Light ruby. Pungent, floral aromas of cherry, plum preserves, rose, damp earth and tobacco. Very rich and velvety, with ripe, dense dark berry and bitter cherry flavors accented by licorice and black cardamom. Sweet, firmly structured and long, picking up exotic notes of vanilla and baking spices on the finish. (JR)
The special selection for American importer Peter Weygandt, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes, ratchets up the level of succulence, juiciness, and opulence. It is a fabulous, compelling effort of multiple dimensions. Classic aromas and flavors of licorice, kirsch liqueur, balsam wood, and lavender are found in this enormously full-bodied wine along with unreal concentration and perfect balance. This astonishing effort should drink well for 20+ years. (RP)
Deep ruby. Black raspberry, smoky herbs and Asian spices on the nose. Suave and fine-grained, with deep flavors of raspberry, blackberry and tangy minerals. A step up in extract and power from the regular bottling, with more depth and intensity to its red and dark fruit flavors. Gains a floral quality on the back half, finishing sweet, broad and minerally, with dusty tannins and an echo of candied flowers. (JR)
