One of the most famous Barolo crus from the lightest soil. Classically structured but atypically lighter-styled. Red berries, violets, roses and lots of silk. (ID)
Good deep, saturated red. Wild cherry, caramel, licorice and minerals on the nose; an essence of Barolo. A compellingly sweet, opulent '06 with captivating minerality giving definition and verve to the very rich middle palate. The explosive finish features outstanding vibrancy and huge toothdusting tannins that reach the front teeth. The Romirasco vines date back to 1937, according to Giacomo. A great showing today. The 2006 Barolo Romirasco offers up a refined bouquet of spices, menthol, plums, prunes and French oak. This is an especially rich, sensual Barolo from Conterno. The Romirasco spends an additional 3-4 months in oak than the other single-vineyard Barolos, and in 2006 the wine seems especially marked by sweet vanillin and spices. The tannins also carry the signature of fresh oak. If the wine finds its center and integrates its oak it will merit a higher score, but for now the balance of the finest vintages seems elusive. Conterno uses large casks for their Barolos, but scrapes out the insides of the barrels every few years. The 2006 Romirasco feels like it got an unusually high amount of these refurbished barrels. Dense and thick and really exciting. Liquorice and racy but very fine and very nervy. Dry finish now, but more luscious than the 2005. More fruit weight. (JR) 18.5/20 points
