2004 Penley "Phoenix" Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra South Australia (qty: 12)
Delicious, supple mouthfeel; cassis fruit flavours; good oak and tannin management.
The Bordeaux varietal cuvees include the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Phoenix. This deep ruby/purple-tinged, full-bodied red reveals notes of creme de cassis, licorice, and spicy new oak. Moderately tannic, rich, and powerful, it requires several years of bottle age. (RP) 91+
Dense ruby. Powerful, nicely delineated scents of cassis, cherry skin, espresso, mint and graphite; this could be a hot-vintage Medoc wine. Nicely focused blackcurrant and cherry flavors are complicated by a note of bitter chocolate, with fine-grained tannins providing structure. This midweight cabernet should age nicely for at least a decade. (JR)
Coonawarra is one of the few places in Australia where cabernet can achieve this level of flavor intensity without excess weight. Penley's Phoenix is structured and firm in '04, a rich, smoky cabernet for a porcini-dusted rib eye.
