As les Cras is located on the Vosne side of Nuits, there was little or no frost damage here and these great old vines (all at least seventy-five years of age) have excelled in 2016. The gorgeous nose jumps from the glass in a blaze of black cherries, sweet dark berries, a complex base of soil tones, raw cocoa, woodsmoke, gamebird and a nice touch of Vosne-like spices in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite soil-driven in personality, with a sappy core, excellent balance, fine-grained tannins and a long, nascently complex and youthful finish. This is going to be terrific in the fullness of time, but it will need a good ten to twelve years’ worth of bottle age to really start to stir. (Drink between 2028-2075) 93+ points

Mild reduction masks the underlying fruit but not the pretty floral elements. I very much like the mouthfeel of the energetic and intensely mineral-driven medium weight flavors that possess fine volume while flashing excellent persistence on the complex if youthfully austere and moderately structured finish. This should benefit from extended keeping and will need at least 5 to 7 years first. In a word, lovely. *Outstanding*

Deep, bright red. Distinctly dark aromas of blackberry, cassis and blueberry. This intense fruit bomb is a real high-wire act of concentrated sweet, ripe berry fruit and Vosne-side elegance. Silky, structured wine with serious force and a firm tannic spine to support a graceful evolution in bottle. The tiny millerandé berries here give the wine both sucrosité and acidity, according to Clavelier. This wine struck me as very different in style from the preceding samples. (ST)

The 2016 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras was quite ripe and showy on the nose, more Vosne-Romanée in style than Nuits-Saint-Georges, comparatively opulent with red plum, blueberry and cranberry fruit. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, rounded in the mouth with desiccated orange peel and a touch of Moroccan spice and cinnamon on the finish. Fine, though not my favorite from Clavelier this vintage. (NM)
