Bid on this bottle of 1989 Paul Jaboulet Aîné "La Chapelle" Hermitage (100JS, 98DC, 96JD, 96RP, 96WS). James Suckling: "I have always been a huge fan of this wine, with incredible depth and richness of character. Dried meat, game, berry, spice, asphalt and tar. Full body with layers of ripe tannins and spice. It goes on for minutes on the finish. This is a fabulously spicy with black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, black truffles, sous bois and licorice. Decant two or three hours before serving. Purity and balance. This is the legendary 1961 again." (12/2014)

The 1989 was an exceptional vintage, slightly overshadowed by the historically great 1990. From 40- to 60-year-old vines from Les Bessards, Le Méal and Les Rocoules, this is lighter in aroma than the 1990, with dark chocolate, cigar box and bonfire smoke, slightly more perfumed than the meaty 1990, showing some lighter, more aerial spice notes. It's medium-bodied with superfine tannins, still so vibrant, with a little blackcurrant note on the long, dry, savoury finish. Highly complex, it's becoming lighter now but is still exceptional. (MW)
The 1989 La Chapelle has always shown well, and while it doesn’t match the otherworldly 1990, it offers a sensational drinking experience. Mature notes of black fruits, cured meats, wood smoke, and baking chocolate all flow to a rich, powerful, masculine Hermitage that has a stacked mid-palate and ripe tannins. It’s fully mature yet has the depth and concentration to keep for another decade or more. (JD)
The 1989 Hermitage la Chapelle is still a fabulous wine that offers sensational aromatic fireworks to go with full-bodied richness and depth. Showing classic la Chapelle smoked meats, currants, wood smoke and chocolate, this beauty hits the palate with no hard edges, a blockbuster texture and a finish that just won't quit. It shows the slightly more masculine, austere edge of the vintage, but the tannin is beautifully sweet and it packs a serious amount of fruit in the mid-palate. I've had a few tired bottles of this over the past few years, so provenance is key. Nevertheless, well-stored bottles will continue to drink beautifully for another couple decades. (JD)
A torrid summer with little rain and good weather during the harvest led to a Chapelle of immense potential. Burly and not as seamless as the '90, with layers of this wine's typical plum, mineral and blackberry notes. While monolithic like a granite block, all the pieces should come together as it ages. Blackish ruby with an orange rim. Rich, charred nose and some sweetness on the palate. Definitely not over the hill this bottle. Mildly animal edge but the sweetness won out. 18/20 points (JR)
